The arsenal of malware targeting Android gadgets has grown exponentially, with criminals hiding viruses in people download applications to devices, according to Juniper Networks.

The company specializes in computer systems Global Threat Center found "staggering growth" in the mobile "malware" for Google's Android platform, according to results available online Wednesday.

Juniper researchers reported seeing 472 percent increase in new viruses designed to attack Android devices from July.

More than half of malware were discovered "spyware" messages designed to steal, the location, identity or other personal information devices, according to California-based Juniper.

Most of the remaining virus was designed to Bilk money from smartphone users by sending text messages to premium rate numbers without unit owners to know.

Android devices are prime targets because the online market for third-party applications such as games do nothing to check the software hidden threats, according to Juniper.
